A young Jewish man needs to escape Paris , which is about to be sealed off by the troops from a fascist regime. He escapes to Marseille, assuming the identity of a deceased writer named Weidel.   

Petzold, by creating two worlds,  explores the plight of displaced people and how history is recurring.
